Budget Guide to flying over Icelandic Volcano

(at low altitudes & close proximities)

[iceland series - volcano]

News: Eruption may be coming! - If you have been seeing & thinking about Iceland, the coming months would probably be the best time for you to make the trip for so much more than what your friends have - Flying over the erupting volcano at low altitudes & close proximity, & getting close to it on ground!
Cheap & Safe

You’re probably thinking at the back of mind that THAT flight over the volcano must either cost like the volcanic bomb itself or be dangerous like a timebomb or both. NEITHER. Now you need to hear from the horse’s mouth. *whinnies* The flight over the erupting volcano costed me less than S$180 all-in and there was almost not even ANY turbulence during the entire flight!

Where da' deals at?

You just need to know where to look for such less known deals. You don’t find such deals on the fancy travel brochures. Look at the flying schools for any flight going to the volcano and pilots clocking their hours would easily take you up there. Our flight school receipt (blue ink, below) is pictured and their phone number is “simi”. We got the contacts from the locals at Icelandic Travel Market (www.itm.is), which turned out to be a friendly helpful visitor-center-like place, with staff who didn't mind helping you even when you don't book tours.

Da plan?

So for a plan like this you should preferably involve:

1. a local SIM card for you to call the flying school - around S$20

2. 3 passengers

Most light aircrafts like the Cessna 172M which we rode would take 3 passengers excluding the pilot-in-command. The entire flight costed us a total of 50,000 Icelandic Krónur (Íkr). [Nope. This time it DOESN’T mean I Know Right.] If you had 3 passengers, it works out to be less than S$180. (Hint: many Icelanders might not have taken such flights before still) So we got the mum of our dry-suit snorkelling instructor to help us ease our heartbleed. :)

More?
If you had time & were hardcore, you could even spend about 7 hours hiking up the volcano with a guide, which would cost you around S$300.
